Originating from India, it is now one of most popular herbs around and enjoyed by many. There are few types of basil in the market but the most common variety is known as sweet basil. Choose basil with unmarked leaves, that are large and green. Apply fresh basil as a garnish to dishes. Avoid cooking basil where possible as the leaves can become slimy and lose its flavour.
For optimum keeping, store basil at room temperature in a glass jar with water at the stem. Do not put basil in the refrigerator as the leaves can turn black due to the cold air circulation.
